Idiosyncratic drug reactions occur in a tiny fraction of the population, with incidence rates sometimes as low as 1 in 100,000 people. A classic example of an idiosyncratic effect is prolonged apnea following the administration of the muscle relaxant succinylcholine during anesthesia.
