For routine cataract surgery using modern phacoemulsification, the need for deep general anesthesia has been largely replaced by more localized methods. Today, the combination of topical anesthetic eye drops and an intracameral injection of lidocaine is the most common anesthesia used for cataract surgery, providing excellent pain control with minimal risk. This approach is often supplemented with intravenous (IV) sedation to help patients relax throughout the procedure.
