First reported in 1985, the drug atosiban is the most well-known example of an oxytocin inhibitor, developed to halt premature uterine contractions. This class of medication, known as oxytocin antagonists, works by blocking the action of the hormone oxytocin at its receptors.

While oxytocin is primarily known for its role in childbirth and social bonding, evidence shows it can influence the gastrointestinal (GI) tract due to the presence of oxytocin receptors throughout the gut. This influence on gut motility means that, in some contexts, a key question for patients and clinicians is, “Can oxytocin cause diarrhea?”
