According to a 2025 systematic review, hydroxychloroquine is frequently used to manage the cutaneous manifestations of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs), including dermatomyositis. While primarily beneficial for skin issues, its effectiveness for muscle weakness in myositis is limited, and it carries the risk of a serious drug-induced myopathy that can be mistaken for a disease flare.
