While it is extremely rare, it is possible for a patient to sneeze while under certain forms of light intravenous sedation, though it is virtually impossible under deep general anesthesia. The fundamental reason lies in how different levels of anesthesia impact the body’s involuntary reflexes, with deep anesthesia designed to suppress them entirely.

Generally speaking, the deep state of unconsciousness induced by general anesthesia suppresses protective reflexes, including sneezing. However, under certain conditions like lighter sedation, a sneeze can occur, particularly in response to specific triggers.
